I had the great pleasure of sitting down with 4 of the coolest dudes I’ve met so far in my adventures of interviewing musicians. These guys are passionate about their music and can joke around with the best of them. They were formerly known as the 806 Main st. But now heav been rockin’ the new name for a while and kickin’ ass and turning heads every since. These guys have a great style of indie, folk, and rock. Heres what they had to say.
Band Members: John – Lead Guitar, Alex – Keys, vocals, Quinten – Drums, Max – Vocals, Guitar
Where did the name The Broderick come from?
- its actually a funny story it came from a 30s slang dictionary that Max’s dad had. Broderick actually means a good beating or beat down. haha
Originals?
- oh ya we don’t do many covers any more. We do a cover of St. James, but we mainly do our own songs. We have 12 originals and another 3-4 new ones that don’t have names yet. We are always adding new variants to our songs, and sometimes when we make mistakes it turns out sounding better or just a cool little twist. Last time we recorded was about a year ago.
Out of all your songs which one is your favorite to play?
John- I would have to say The Flood, cause its the second song and if we didn’t get the crowd on the first song we’ll get on the second.
Alex- ya I’d have to agree with John and say The Flood
Quinten- I like Pearl city, we usually close our set with it, its an older song
Max- Ya Pearl city is my favorite too, styles change over the years but I still love it
Describe your band in three words?
how about 6 - haha, Beer, Balls, Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll
If you could share the stage with one band or musician who would it be?
Quinten- Jim James
John- Nick Thorburn
Alex- Mark Kozelek
Max- Josh Ritter
4 years ago we would have love to do with Kings of Leon
Favorite Venue to play at?
- Definitely the Mercury Lounge in New York, we played there this past summer in June, it was absolutely amazing.
Do you guys hangout outside of performing and practice?
- haha oh ya, we are our only friends, lol we need to venture out and meet more people in the music community. We’re assholes, its apart of our rock and roll lifestyle hahaha no just kidding, but if anyone out there wants to be our friend we’re looking for some new ones.
Funny Stories of past shows?
-oh man, it was during Mardi Gras awhile ago, we were totally excited and practiced hardcore for the show. We get to the venue and the average age of the crowd is between 60-70 years old. We were playing with the Hoosier Swing band and Creole Stomp. Our first song was a little folky but then it went into the heavier stuff. We noticed this one old guy in the crowd just looking as pissed as can be. He was wearing one of those green and white striped Dr. Seuss hats haha. So we decided to dedicate the next song to him. We later find out that he couldn’t hear, but that he really liked the band lol
We are always spontaneous and joking around on stage
If you could have written one song on the radio right now which one would it be?
- um can you tell you the ones that we hate and would have never written haha
Max- I hate Nickleback and wouldn’t have written anything they have done lol
- That band Swayze? ya they suck, we hate them, we also hate country lyrics, we enjoy making fun of them haha
Where do you find yourself in 5 years?
-hopefully touring consistently, maybe we might be signed, but not for the money. We would want to be signed mainly for the support, so that they would pay for the tours, gas, vans, etc… so that our rent is paid through music, but other than that its not for the money, we’re not trying to get rich, its just hard to tour without vans and gas money your know.
You are given the chance to play one more stage, one more show, for a sellout crowd at any venue in the world. Where would you play? Who would you want to open for you? and what is the last thing you would say before you walked off stage?
-oh man, probably not a large venue, more like a large classy theatre in Chicago or New York or Louisville or Athens, GA would be cool too. We would want a band to open for us that is in our place now. So that we could help them out. And the last thing we would say before going off stage….um….. we have CDs for sale in the back haha
Whats one thing you want your audience to know about you?
Were not really assholes, just really desperate for friends lol, no were just a group of guys on the front lines makin’ music, just come out and support, We play good music so you don’t have to.
The Broderick ladies and gentlemen. I’d have to say that this was one of my favorite interviews. I got a copy of their new EP, titled Tornado, and it is badass, I’m serious you all need to get a copy of it. You can pick up a copy off their website, http://www.thebroderick.com/home.html , they also have a myspace page where you can also get a copy of their EP. They have an upcoming show in Indianapolis on Dec. 21, 8pm Moria w/ Grampall Jookabox, Thunders, CJ Boyd Sexxxtet, and Grapefruit. I highly suggest you all go check them out, you will not be disappointed. Also these guys are from Bloomington so if your down there check one of their webpages to see if they are playing anywhere so you can see them, they will blow your mind. The please was all mine here at Indy Concerts

These guys are so great. You have to see them live to really appreciate them though!
The Broderick is one of my favorite bands. I’ve known them for a while and it’s good to see them getting some recogniton.
These guys are awesome. It’s good to see them getting some recognition.
Great interview Barret!
I’ve watched these boys go from a scrappy little home-show collection of dabblers(after some drum lessons, Max started making music on fruity loops), to a polished troupe of perfomers. Every permutation just keeps getting better.
The Broderick has been fun to watch develop. They have great potential. I enjoy their original songs. The Broderick definitely rocks!
You guys rule…nuf said.
I love The Broderick!! I get down to their beats. Come play a show in Coloradoooooooooo!
