From The Vault: Bramhall – Jellycream

Because so much great music goes by us I feel the need to point out music when it’s worthy of praise so “From The Vault” is born! Doyle Bramhall II will perform at this weekends Crossroads Guitar Festival and I’ll have more on that event next week. For those unaware Doyle shares front man honors with Charlie Sexton in the rock band Arc Angels who have two albums to their credit. On Jelly Cream Doyle further exercised his creative ability after his first solo release Doyle Bramhall II. What came forward is one of the best albums one could own as made evident by the fact that Eric Clapton and B.B. King requested to use the songs “I Wanna Be” and “Marry You” for their duo album “Riding With The King.”  Upon Clapton making the request Bramhall was then asked to record on Eric and B.B.’s album along with them, which was the start of Eric and Doyle’s relationship which continues today.

Bramhall is an amazing mix of  soulful, distinctive vocals and the incredible guitar play which led to Doyle touring with Clapton year after year and along side Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters with Doyle covering guitar and vocals previously performed by David Gilmore. All thirteen tracks display Doyle’s link to blues having grown up around the Vaughan brothers and countless others and also shows his growth from other influences like Sly and The Family Stone. Fellow Arc Angel mates  Charlie Sexton and Chris Layton, as well as long time Lenny Kravitz guitarist Craig Ross also contributed on this album which to me is part of a fraternity of musicians rich in talent and history for making incredible music! From lack of effective marketing and possibly just missed opportunity this album fell without gaining the recognition it soulfully deserved and to no fault of Doyle’s.  This is one album I truly cherish and listen to often and a reason to give a listen for yourself. I’m excited for what will come of Doyle at Crossroads Guitar Festival and the future, but equally as excited to have such a CD in my collection!  From The Vault will highlight artists local or national who have carved their way into music history and Indiana venues, but may have been passed over.
