Album Review: Eminem, “Recovery”

If ever there was an album equivalent to the perfect mixed drink, Eminem’s Recovery is it. As a collective composition of producers, writers, and guest artists, it is Eminem’s ode to collaboration more than anything else. Or rather, it is an album that quintessentially heralds its name: Recovery; “the regaining of or possibility of regaining something lost or taken away.” In this case, it was Eminem’s esteem that was essential to recovery. And he saved it through an alliance with producers Alex da Kid, Just Blaze, Boi-1da, Jim Jonsin, DJ Khalil, and Dr. Dre, guest artists Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Pink, and Kobe, and a big ol’ group of writers.

And then there’s Em himself, spewing words like you’ve never heard before. Never one to confine himself to modesty, Eminem continues to blaze through verses of interwoven anger and passion- maintaining the listener’s interest until each particular song culminates in a climactic yet complete manner. From the chart-hit “Love the Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna to “On Fire,” Eminem is unrestrained throughout. Because after all, his method has always had a madness.
