When one proverbial music door closes, one kick ass window opens. Greta Morgan formerly of the Hush Sound showcases her lovely vocals in her solo project, Gold Motel. Goosebumps formed as I listened to their first full-length album Summer House. Released June 1st, Summer House is a dreamy; sun kissed, ten track, Indie essential. Written in Southern California, forget your Midwest cares, leave the hay bales behind and escape to the West Coast. Summer House is surely inviting, melodic, witty, and packed with outstanding lyrics. Your summer soundtrack is here. The first single, “We’re on the Run” is a perfect upbeat, airy, Beach Boy-esque track which sets the scene for the entire album. After one listen, I was already picking out the succulent phrases, I knew would get stuck in my head and define a time period in my life. This is one of THOSE records. “Safe in L.A. was a fast favorite for me, while “Who Will I Be Tonight” not only spotlights Greta’s ethereal voice, but also shows the diversity of the album. It does tell a love story, which all-excellent music does. However, and this is a BIG however, it’s not a disgusting, overdone, woe is me, love tale, but a “How do they do that?! That’s totally how I feel!” one.
When playing in the Hush Sound, the band toured with the likes of Jack’s Mannequin, Phantom Planet, and One Republic. Gold Motel lives up to every one of those musical standards. The beautiful and rare thing about a band like Gold Motel is in this: The warm sunshine that leaps off every measure of music on this record, no matter the season, will keep you cozy warm with that bit’ o bronze glow all year round. Fantastic Album. Own it.
Sounds Like: fun. (Which is awesome!), She & Him, The Beach Boys, The Hush Sound
I know you are all foaming at the mouth already, relax! You can pick up their album at Amazon, iTunes, or perhaps the best option, Catch Gold Motel at the Vollrath Tavern on June 19th! You’ll be kicking yourself in six months when you miss it.
