You missed it!! I’m not kidding!! you missed one incredible show at the Slippery Noodle Thursday June 17th. I came into the night knowing Jim was a great guitar player and that he has been George Thorogood’s guitar player for 10 years but what I didn’t know is what came from the back stage that evening. Jim’s performance was nothing less than amazing! His band played as any road tested band should, with a magical chemistry and appreciation for those who came out. I was most impressed with Jim’s guitar style, I mean styles! I couldn’t hold him to Texas blues since he hails from the state of Texas, as he had too many styles all rolled into each song. I heard hints of jazz, blues, and rock that filled the room as he created each song for those who sat in wonder as I did. It wasn’t the usual guitar runs he played, it was music, incredible sounds all forming a melodic mix that wowed the senses! Jim’s vocals, the keyboard/organ, drums, and bass all melted together into one enjoyable evening of music and you could tell these guys were having fun!
Jim played songs from their new release “Tijuana Bible” and a few from previous releases like “My Morning Prayer” which sounded wonderful and had a familiar feel from the accordion accompanying the mix. It reminded me of fellow hoosier John Mellencamp and those accordion songs which gained popularity for him many moons ago. Another song which left me wanting more was Suhler and companies cover of “Are you experienced” but as Jim stated “it was Hendrix, Johnson style.” Jim played reminiscent of Robert Johnson as he changed up the song to work with the resonator and although we knew the lyric the music gave it a whole new kick! My favorite song of the night was “Shake” as it has been provoking people to do just that for years! All in all it was the best free show I have seen! Yes a summer special it was, no cover, half price drinks, and the full flavor of Jim suhler & Monkey Beat. It just goes to show you, take a chance to live a little and you just may get alot! I won’t let you down in informing you when Suhler and company come back around, you don’t let me down in coming out to discover it yourself!
