Well, well, well…Indianapolis, I stand corrected. The show this past Sunday was not made up of screaming teenagers, but rather mature adults enjoying terrific tunes. There were also people singing the words to nearly every song the Avett Brothers sang, no matter how old it was. So there ya know, you never know until you’re there and I admit, my bad Indy, my bad. I must say, it was a beautiful site to see the Egyptian Room THAT full. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been to plenty of shows in the Egyptian Room where there has been a large crowd, however, it was more than obvious that The Avett Brothers show was sold out by simply gazing up the staircase from the first floor.
I was completely blown away by their performance….and yes, that includes the set list. They played a wonderful mix of all of their past albums, focusing most heavily on the latest, I and Love and You (with 8 songs), followed by their other most recent Emotionalism (with 5 songs). The crowd was more than energetic for a Sunday night and the lines at the bar stations were out of this world. “You get it, Indianapolis professionals,” I thought. No one was letting the fact that it was a Sunday night get in the way of thoroughly enjoying this more than pleasant evening. The band also seemed just as excited to be playing on a Sunday, especially in Indianapolis. A personal highlight of mine had to be when they sang “Salina” off of Emotionalism. Why did I specifically enjoy this song you may ask? It has a personal shout out to Indianapolis in the lyrics and you better believe us Hoosiers were yelling up a storm after that one. Another favorite of mine was “The Ballad of Love and Hate.” They turned the lights down and let this one be purely acoustic…and FULL of emotion.
I give this show a 10 out of 10, honestly, it was unbelievable. It has been awhile since I’ve seen a show where the talent of the musicians is truly breathtakingly beautiful.
