Mark down May 7 on your calendar, because Band of Horses is rolling into Indy opening up for Pearl Jam. On paper this seems like an odd pairing. In one corner you have Pearl Jam, a band that was at the forefront of the grunge movement. In the other corner you have Band of Horses, an established indie rock band that has taken on a more country rock sound as of late. Of course the one thing these bands do have in common is that they both have deep roots in Seattle. They both identify with the upper northwest corner of the US, although Band of Horses has more recently relocated back to their home state of South Carolina. This tour pairing does bring some different sounds, but both bands play very crowd pleasing music.
Pearl Jam and Band of Horses both have a long list of tour dates, but they meet up on May 3 and play much of the month together before departing for other dates. With Pearl Jam consistently showing opposition to Live Nation and Ticketmaster, I hope I’ll get to cover this show. I highly doubt that will be the case. With that being said, Band of Horses is the selling point here. They are one of my favorite bands and there is no force in this world that will stop me from going to see them. The concert here in Indy comes just a couple of weeks before the release of their third studio album, Infinite Arms. You can check out that story here.
I’m was elated when I heard Band of Horses would be coming to town. It should be interesting to see Pearl Jam as well, but for me Band of Horses is the real story here. Band of Horses would be better suited opening up for a band more in their genre, and it will be interesting to see how well they are received by Pearl Jam fans who may not have heard any of their music. Pearl Jam has some really great songs, but Band of Horses could very easily steal the show.
