In today’s Idol-loving generation, we’ve been hoodwinked into believing that talent only exists in your teens and twenties. We rarely hear about the fact that anyone over 30 isn’t even allowed to audition for American Idol. Did the homely Brit Susan Boyle make a case for a rule change? Some people are saying absolutely!
British and American newspapers have reported that the 47-year-old, unemployed Boyle walked on the audition stage of Britain’s Got Talent to Simon Cowell rolling his eyes, and members of the audience laughing at her. The laughing and eye rolling was likely due to her outfit, which resembled a sofa or old curtains, and her frumpy appearance – from the frizzy hair to the caterpillar eyebrows. She even got a huge laugh from the crowd when Simon questioned her age…she swiveled her hips and said, “Forty-seven, and that’s only one side of me!”
Despite the humor, it was clear the audience and judges had low expectations for her performance. So it came as a huge surprise when she belted out an incredible version of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables – walking off the stage to a standing ovation.
Her performance sent her further into the competition, and she’s the early favorite to win the show. In the last three days, the clip of Susan Boyle’s shocking performance has over 3 million YouTube hits (and that’s only on the version I watched). It’s my must-watch advice for the day.
