Ricky Martin puts to rest a longtime rumor by confirming on his Web site that he is in fact gay.
“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am,” he wrote.
This will probably surprise no one–at least it didn’t surprise me. Martin came bursting on the scene in the 90s with his swiveling hips and released a slew of insanely popular, yet irritating songs such as “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” “Shake Your Bon Bon” and “She Bangs.”
The past several years, Martin has laid low. He became the father of twin sons with the help of a surrogate, which sparked further speculation that he was gay.
Martin, who is currently writing his memoirs, said that his advisors urged him from revealing his sexual orientation years ago due to fear he would ruin his career.
“Many people told me…’all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse,” he said. “Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.”
Perhaps now that Martin came out, he will consider a comeback…or at least a mentor position on American Idol.
Everyone has a right to his privacy but is really was quite noticeable that he is not heterosexual.
